About this programme

What this covers

Freelancers often have a good sense of income but a fuzzy picture of actual costs. Subscriptions accumulate, home office expenses go untracked, and tax-deductible spending gets missed because there was no system to catch it.

This programme is short by design. It covers the decisions that matter most when you are working alone or with one or two collaborators: what to track, what to cut, and how to price work so the numbers actually add up.

The problems this addresses

Underpricing is the most common cost issue for freelancers — not because people do not know their rate, but because they have not accounted for all the hours and expenses that surround billable work.

You will build a personal cost model during the programme. By the end, you will know your actual cost per working day and whether your current rates cover it.

Suitable for designers, consultants, writers, developers, and other independent professionals. No spreadsheet experience required.

Programme structure

Step by step

What You Will Work Through

  1. Session 1 — Mapping your real costs

Software, equipment, insurance, professional development, and the time costs that rarely appear on invoices.

  2. Session 2 — Your cost per billable day

A simple model that accounts for non-billable time, holidays, and irregular income months.

  3. Session 3 — Pricing that covers costs

How to set day rates and project fees with a clear margin, not just a market comparison.

  4. Session 4 — Tracking without complexity

Lightweight systems for recording expenses consistently. What tools work, what is overkill.

  5. Session 5 — Tax-deductible costs and record-keeping

An overview of common deductible categories for self-employed individuals in Ireland. Not tax advice, but a practical orientation.

Each session includes a short worksheet. The whole programme takes around four hours of focused time.
